Building blocks at RFH

More good public art making people stop and think about space in a different way. Like that.

Jubilee Approaches

image

It’s so rare to see patriotism displayed with the Union Jack that this sight did make me stop and stare this morning. Whatever the history attached to it, it really has to go down as one of the more interesting flags of the world. No disrespect to the humble leaf that graces my home flag, I love its nod to nature and the fact it’s impossible to hold the wrong way up. Well, with one exception in 1992. Search ‘upside down Canadian flag’ to relive that incident.

Boy on a horse

image

I saw a photo of the new Fourth Plinth statue in the paper a few weeks back and was unmoved.

My first sighting of it today made me stop and stare; a child playing amongst monuments to war. It’s fantastic.

It just shows how important context can be to public art installations.

The State of Seething

image

I managed to find the Seething Festival today (got times confused so was a bit late). It took me a while to warm up to this neighbourhood, but the lovely peopleat The Lamb have injected some much needed silliness into life here with events like this. All in honour of Lefi the Goat Boy.

Cornish Christmas

image

My mother always swore that the light in Ireland was special. It must be something to do with the rugged landscape and huge amounts of sea surrounding us.

I see that same light every time I’m in Cornwall. There’s something about it that makes you think there just might be some truth to mystical local legends about faeries and tors.

In Bruges

We visited Bruges last month. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and really beautiful.  Perfect for a couple of days of wandering and enjoying the local beer.

Something I really enjoyed about it was that it continues to be a city that’s lived in.  We saw plenty of tourists, no doubt, but it’s a university town and we ran into more than a few elementary schools – we’d see little snakes of kids wandering through the town daily, out for excursions here and there.  The kids all had to wear high visibility vests which made them particularly easy to spot.

I’ve been pretty shoddy about posting on this site over the last six months.  Life gets in the way all too much and it was great to get somewhere for a couple of days where not a whole lot happened, and all you could do was walk and pedal and sit and watch the world go by.
